Think Positive, Not Punitive - Promoting Responsible Student Behavior

3:20 PM–4:15 PM Oct 21, 2019 (US - Central)

Room 403, PCC

Description

At Stevenson High School, we attempt to create a climate that encourages teachers, students, parents, and administrators to think positive, not punitive! Stevenson’s system of interventions for student behavior is built on the idea that students earn privileges for exhibiting appropriate interactions with all stakeholders. By making wise behavioral choices, coupled with academic progress, students can earn expanding privileges and growing independence. Some examples of this include earning an extended lunch period, an unscheduled period, parking privileges, and other opportunities not available to students who consistently make poor decisions. Additionally, the Administrative Operations team at Stevenson strives to create accountability in students without removing them from instructional time or implementing punitive measures. The system is administered by the Assistant Principal for Operations and a team of 6 full-time deans. In this session, participants will learn how we establish behavioral expectations with an emphasis on the development of social and emotional competence. This session also offers schools a behavioral template to show how the privilege system can work in conjunction with specialized programs (restorative justice, community partnerships, behavioral contracts).
